Molecular Radiative Dynamics of the Atmosphere
Blue = Nitrogen or Oxygen; Green = radiative (greenhouse) gas, i.e. water or CO2;
Orange = radiative gas excited by collision or infrared (IR) photon absorption.
Red = de-excitation with the emission of an infrared photon.
De-excitation mainly occurs in collisions.
Molecule with halo just singled out for easy tracking.
Time and distance scaled for visual convenience. Sticky collisions are a bug.
Rising red waves reflect the fact that there is a net upward flow of IR to space
which is negating the greenhouse "trapping" of energy in the lower atmosphere.
